Some Tips for Designing Your Own Home

Are you thinking about designing your own home? I have some tips that you might consider useful if you are,
- Think green. Whenever possible make recyclable or environmentally safe choices. That means, solar heat and hot water, green paints and flooring, lighting that uses compact fluorescent bulbs, and so on.
- Consider using radiant floor heat instead of forced air.
- Laundry rooms belong on the same floor as bedrooms. If that is not possible, and your basement is set up for laundry, put in a laundry chute.
- If you are planning on a large kitchen, put in two sinks on opposite sides. You will love the convenience! – People are larger than they used to be, so go for wider shower stalls and tubs. They will need to be put in place before doorways are framed out!
- Plan a dramatic entryway for your home. It doesn’t have to be huge, but should have enough space for a decent guest closet, a table to place hats, purses or packages down on, and a chair or bench for sitting.
- Design your landscaping before placing back doors, sliding doors, patios, and bay windows. If you aren’t careful that bay can end up on your patio, or with a view of your air conditioning unit.
- Allow for adequate electrical outlets all over your house. If you are doing a furniture grouping with a table in the middle of a room, you need some floor outlets in place. Kitchen counters should have plenty of outlets for convenient use of small appliances.
- Don’t forget cable, telephone and computer wiring for any room you could ever want to use those items in.
Careful, thoughtful planning will give you the place you always dreamed of!
