Whether you’re going to have a simple water garden or a fish lagoon, a koi pond filter is an essential part you shouldn’t take for granted. These pond appliances have many configurations, with price cost depending on its elaboration. It would be necessary for you to have a pump, koi pond filter and aerator in your lagoon. You can install the garden appliances within the pond or outermost, but choose discreetly because different types has their benefits and drawbacks.

The simplest type of koi pond filter is a basket filter. Whatever the design, these types can be positioned above the water surface or even underwater. These pond filters work by forcing the water through a net which captures larger debris and then returning the water to the pond. You need these filters for your pond. Whether it big or small, different sizes of debris can be removed by different types of garden pond filters. Scour the basket filter every now and then to avoid the occurrence of clogging. This is done according to the schedule designed by the manufacturer of the device.

An improved type of filter is available in your favorite garden store today called UV filter. This type of garden pond filter proves true the saying that “sunlight is the best disinfectant.” Quite notably, the sun’s ultraviolet radiation wipes out scruffs and brown algae so effectively.

Garden pond filters exposes the water to the powerful UV light which destroys algae and deadly organisms that’s often bad for the fish. This type of pond filter does require cleaning. The UV bulb housing may become encrusted with grime after a time and this needs to be removed so that the maximum possible amount of UV light is delivered to the water that travels through the pump. These pumps generally take a small amount of water through them at a time. They would excellently enhance your pond for sure but they can’t necessarily handle water quantities that can sufficiently make all the water safe in the whole pond.

Bacterial garden pond filter on the other hand uses good live organisms to purify the water from algae which preys on the fish and pond occupants. These pumps have to be primed with bacteria before they are set to work cleaning the fish pond water. According to your manufacturer’s advice, this pumps are re-primed frequently in its few weeks of first use and then at intervals much longer thereafter. Bacterial filters works best against algae and other “pond scum” type pollutants. When one switches on a particulate pond filter, such as the aforementioned basket filter, the results will be visible before too long. A bacterial filter takes a while just to clean up fouled water and this can take as long as a couple of months. The garden pond filters need to be installed before you see any algae problem to prevent more trouble of having to clean some mess once the plants are established.

The results of a filtration type have significant effects on the pond volume. As a reminder, you should not cut corners in the area of where you place the pond filters. Filters need to have the capacity to filter half of the water volume of the pond in every hour. For large ponds, obviously, one should anticipate spending a decent amount of money on filtration technology. While this may seem excessive, without proper filtration the fish in the pond will inevitably become sick and die.
