    The L-Shaped Kitchen

l-shaped-kitchenThe L-shaped kitchen is the most popular of kitchen designs. It is made up of a long wall and a shorter one, which works both in large and small kitchens. If you have the space, you have the added advantage of being able to have a center island, an island/breakfast bar combination, or a table and chairs centered in the room without crowding the work area space. A minimum of thirty-six inches is needed as wall space between the cabinets and the chairs.
The usual appliance arrangement is to have the refrigerator at one end (whichever you prefer), the stove or cooktop at the other, and your sinks near the center. This allows for a good flow of traffic and gives you specific work station areas. If the kitchen is in a corner of the house, this is really the most desirable layout.
The only problem that can occur when using the L-shaped kitchen is how to handle the corner cabinets. However, you do have choices on how to use this space:

    • The corner lazy susan – This usually consists of two circular shelves, with a door that swings around to access the back of the shelves. The door is part of the corner, and just pushes either way to expose the lazy susan. This type of cabinet is particularly useful for spices and canned goods.
    • The dead space cabinet- In this case one part of the L has a very deep section that is hard to access and is best used for storage of items you rarely use…perhaps holiday serving pieces, canning pots, or seasonal items.
